menerbaut

Menerbaut is a commune in the Criuleni district of Moldova. It is situated on the east bank of the Dniester River, approximately 9 kilometers northwest of the district center Criuleni.

The commune consists of the villages of Menerbaut and Chicera. Menerbaut has a population of approximately 1,400 people as of the 2004 census. The village has a predominantly rural character, with the main occupation of the residents being agriculture.

The name Menerbaut is thought to be of Tatar origin, related to the Turkish word "menker" meaning "scissors" or "curtailed". The village has historical ties with both the Principality of Moldavia and the Russian Empire. During the 19th century, Menerbaut was a significant trading post, known for its wine and honey production.

Economically, Menerbaut is primarily an agricultural area, with wheat and sunflower production being the main crops. The commune also has small-scale industries, including a brick factory and a bakery. The village has basic infrastructure, including a school, a medical center, and a few shops.

Tourism in the area is largely limited to nearby sights, including the settlement of Teliuc, known for its natural spring and the Dniester Canyon. Menerbaut has easy access to the city of Tiraspol, the capital of the breakaway Transnistrian region, which is located about 45 kilometers south of the village.
