Melanosomal refers to anything related to melanosomes. Melanosomes are specialized organelles found in melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in animals. Their primary function is the synthesis, storage, and transport of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color. These organelles are essentially tiny vesicles within the cell that contain the machinery for melanin production.

The process of melanosome formation and melanin synthesis is known as melanogenesis. Within the melanosome, enzymes like tyrosinase convert tyrosine into melanin. For example, individuals with darker skin generally have larger, more densely packed melanosomes that are distributed more evenly in keratinocytes compared to individuals with lighter skin.
