It refers to a worldview or philosophical approach that explains phenomena solely through mechanical principles, cause and effect, and material processes. This perspective tends to view the universe and its components, including living organisms and even consciousness, as complex machines that can be understood and predicted by analyzing their constituent parts and their interactions.

The mechanistic worldview gained significant traction during the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. Thinkers like René Descartes, while often considered a dualist, also contributed to mechanistic thought by describing animal bodies as complex automata. Later, figures such as Isaac Newton's laws of motion provided a powerful framework for understanding the physical world in purely mechanical terms. This approach emphasizes objectivity, empirical observation, and reductionism, seeking to break down complex systems into simpler, understandable units.

In its strictest form, a mechanistic explanation excludes notions of teleology (purpose or design) or vitalism (a life force distinct from physical matter). While highly successful in many scientific fields, particularly physics and chemistry, the application of a purely mechanistic lens to biology, psychology, and sociology has faced significant challenges and critiques.
