mehiläisyhteisöihin
A mehiläisyhteisö, or bee colony, is a complex social unit typically composed of tens of thousands of honey bees. These colonies are characterized by a strict division of labor, with each individual bee performing specific roles to ensure the survival and reproduction of the entire group. The core of any mehiläisyhteisö is the queen bee, whose primary function is reproduction. She is the only fertile female in the colony and lays all the eggs. Worker bees, which are sterile females, constitute the vast majority of the colony. They are responsible for a wide range of tasks, including foraging for nectar and pollen, building and maintaining the hive, caring for the brood (eggs and larvae), and defending the colony from threats. Male bees, known as drones, have the sole purpose of mating with a queen. They do not participate in hive maintenance or foraging. Communication within the mehiläisyhteisö is sophisticated, employing methods such as pheromones and intricate "dances" to convey information about food sources and other important matters. The colony functions as a superorganism, with the collective well-being prioritized over individual needs. Factors such as food availability, disease, and environmental conditions significantly influence the health and size of a mehiläisyhteisö.
