A mechanoreceptor is a sensory receptor that responds to mechanical pressure or distortion. These receptors are crucial for perceiving touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception (the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body). They are found in various tissues throughout the body, including the skin, muscles, joints, and internal organs.

Mechanoreceptors are a diverse group of sensory neurons or specialized cells that convert mechanical stimuli into electrical signals. This process, known as mechanotransduction, involves the opening or closing of ion channels in response to physical deformation. The resulting ion flow changes the membrane potential of the receptor cell, which can then trigger an action potential that travels to the central nervous system.

Different types of mechanoreceptors are specialized to detect specific kinds of mechanical stimuli. For example, Merkel cells in the skin are sensitive to sustained pressure, while Pacinian corpuscles are attuned to deep pressure and rapid vibrations. Hair follicles in the skin also contain mechanoreceptors that detect light touch and hair movement. In muscles and joints, specialized receptors like muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs provide information about muscle stretch and tension, contributing to our sense of body position and movement. These receptors are essential for a wide range of bodily functions, from fine motor control to maintaining balance.
