Megvilágítottság is a Hungarian term that translates to illuminance in English. It is a photometric measure describing the amount of luminous flux that falls on a given surface area. The standard unit for illuminance in the International System of Units (SI) is the lux (lx). One lux is equal to one lumen per square meter (lm/m²).

Illuminance is a crucial concept in fields such as lighting design, photography, and vision science. It quantifies how brightly a surface is illuminated, regardless of the source of the light. For instance, a desk lamp might provide a high illuminance on the desk surface directly beneath it, while the illuminance on the ceiling would be significantly lower.

Factors influencing illuminance include the intensity of the light source, the distance from the source to the surface, and the angle at which the light strikes the surface. Reflective surfaces can also indirectly contribute to the perceived illuminance by scattering light. Different activities require specific levels of illuminance for optimal performance and comfort. For example, reading typically requires more illuminance than a casual walk outdoors during the day. Measuring illuminance is often done using a light meter, also known as a lux meter.
