Measurement metrology is the science of measurement. It encompasses all theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, whatever the measurement system, whatever the application, and whatever the measurement unit. It is a field that involves the establishment of a unit of measurement, the development of methods for its realization, and the investigation of the quality of measurement results. Metrology is fundamental to virtually all fields of science, technology, and industry. Without accurate and reliable measurements, scientific research would be impossible, engineering designs would be unreliable, and manufacturing processes would be inconsistent.

There are three main branches of metrology. Scientific metrology deals with the establishment of measurement units, the development of new measurement methods, the realization of measurement standards, and the transfer of traceability from these standards to users in society. Industrial metrology is concerned with the application of measurement science to manufacturing and other industrial processes. This includes ensuring the accuracy of instruments used in production, quality control, and calibration. Legal metrology is concerned with measurements that have legal implications, particularly for consumer protection, trade, and health and safety. This often involves the regulation of measuring instruments and the establishment of legal requirements for their use.

The International System of Units (SI) is the modern form of the metric system and the world's most widely used system of measurement. The SI is built upon seven SI base units: the meter for length, the kilogram for mass, the second for time, the ampere for electric current, the kelvin for thermodynamic temperature, the mole for amount of substance, and the candela for luminous intensity. Metrology plays a crucial role in ensuring the consistency and comparability of measurements across different countries and scientific disciplines, facilitating international trade and scientific collaboration.
