Matnettverk, also known as food webs, are graphical representations of the feeding relationships within an ecological community. They illustrate who eats whom, showing the flow of energy and nutrients through an ecosystem. Unlike a simple food chain which depicts a linear sequence, a food web is more complex and realistic, encompassing multiple interconnected food chains.

The components of a food web include producers, which are organisms that create their own food, typically through photosynthesis like plants and algae. Primary consumers, or herbivores, feed on producers. Secondary consumers, or carnivores and omnivores, feed on primary consumers. Tertiary consumers feed on secondary consumers, and so on, up to apex predators at the top of the web. Detritivores and decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning nutrients to the ecosystem for producers to utilize.

The structure of a food web can reveal important information about an ecosystem's stability and health. A diverse food web with many species and complex connections is generally more resilient to disturbances, such as the loss of a single species, compared to a simpler food web. Changes in the population of one organism can have cascading effects throughout the entire food web, influencing the populations of other species. Studying food webs helps ecologists understand ecosystem dynamics and predict the consequences of environmental changes or human interventions.
