The individual may experience intense pleasure or relief from the act of acquiring or owning these materials, but this is often followed by feelings of guilt, shame, or distress.

The objects of such addictions can vary widely, encompassing anything from clothing and electronics to collectibles and even excessive amounts of everyday necessities. The core issue lies not in the items themselves, but in the compulsive behavior and the emotional distress it causes. This can manifest as neglecting responsibilities, straining relationships, and experiencing financial difficulties.

While not formally recognized as a distinct addiction in the same way as substance or gambling addiction, the underlying psychological mechanisms can share similarities. These may include a desire for escape, self-soothing, or a perceived enhancement of self-worth through possessions. The cycle often involves anticipation of acquiring an item, followed by the act of acquisition, and then a temporary sense of satisfaction that quickly fades, leading back to the urge to acquire more.
