Massiivipuute, also known as mass timber, is a category of building materials and construction techniques that involve the use of engineered wood products. These products are large structural elements made from solid wood. Common types of mass timber include cross-laminated timber (CLT), glued-laminated timber (glulam), nail-laminated timber (NLT), and laminated veneer lumber (LVL).

CLT is manufactured by bonding layers of lumber together with adhesives, with the grain of each layer oriented perpendicular to the adjacent layers. Glulam is made by gluing together individual pieces of lumber along their wide faces to form larger structural members like beams and columns. NLT uses nails to fasten layers of wood together, and LVL is produced by peeling logs into thin veneers, drying them, and then bonding them together with adhesives under heat and pressure.

Mass timber construction offers several advantages. It is a sustainable material, as wood sequesters carbon and can be sourced from responsibly managed forests. The prefabricated nature of mass timber components can lead to faster on-site construction times and reduced waste. Furthermore, mass timber structures can offer good fire resistance due to charring, which forms an insulating layer. The aesthetic appeal of exposed wood is also a desirable feature for many architects and occupants. Mass timber is being increasingly used in mid-rise and even high-rise buildings worldwide, showcasing its versatility and potential as an alternative to traditional construction materials like concrete and steel.
