Masia refers to a traditional Catalan rural farmhouse and to the common term for a large farm estate. The name derives from mas, meaning estate or farm, and denotes a substantial dwelling that forms the core of a family-run agricultural property. Masies are typically stone or brick buildings with thick load-bearing walls, a tiled or sloped roof, and a central courtyard surrounded by living quarters and outbuildings such as granaries, stables, and storage rooms. Historically they were the center of rural life in Catalonia, around which the surrounding fields, orchards, and vineyards were organized.
