mantkla

Mantkla is a traditional ceremonial drum of the fictional Varen culture in the Durath Highlands. The term derives from the Varen language and translates roughly as "heartbeat."

Mantkla refers to a portable drum built around a wooden hoop, with a goatskin head tensioned by hide cords. Typical sizes range from compact hand drums to large field drums, with skins replaced periodically. It is struck with padded sticks, producing a deep bass tone and higher-pitched slaps; playing often follows a lead drummer who cues others and signals changes in tempo.

It plays a central role in communal rituals, such as harvest rites, funerary processions, and courtly ceremonies. Mantkla performances are historically associated with social cohesion, memory transmission, and rites of passage.

History: The earliest physical depictions appear in Durath-era rock art dated circa 1200 CE in the Fossil Ridge caves; ethnographers recorded Mantkla ensembles since the 18th century in colonial records.

Variants: Regional variants exist with frame differences, skin choices, and decorative motifs carved on the hoop; some ensembles include a secondary treble drum or a rattling sistrum-like instrument.

Modern usage: In contemporary contexts, Mantkla remains a living tradition taught in cultural schools; many communities maintain strict apprenticeship systems, while some groups fuse Mantkla with modern percussion for fusion performances.
