magát

Magát is a Hungarian reflexive pronoun form, used as the accusative (object) of the independent pronoun maga. It denotes that the subject of the sentence is acting upon or referring to itself. In everyday language magát can appear with verbs that take a direct object, signaling a reflexive action or self-directed state. It also appears in emphasized or idiomatic constructions.

In terms of morphology, magát is the third-person singular reflexive pronoun in the accusative: the corresponding nominative forms are ő maga for “he/she himself/herself” and the possessive-expanded form Önmagát for the polite second-person “yourself.” Hungarian also has related forms for other persons in the same paradigm, such as magamat, magadat, magunkat, magatokat, magukat, which function as the respective reflexive objects for I, you (informal), we, you (plural), and they.

- Ő magát hibáztatja. (He blames himself.)

- Önmagát értékeli magasra. (He/She evaluates himself/herself highly.) Note that in formal address, the compound Önmagát is used for “yourself.”

- Magától értődő a tény. (The fact is evident on its own / by itself.) Here magát nélküli adverbial forms like magától express reflexive or automatic action, though not a direct object usage.
