Magneettijuosteet, also known as magnetic tapes, are a type of data storage medium that have been widely used in the past for recording and retrieving digital information. They consist of a plastic base coated with a magnetic material, typically iron oxide, which can be magnetized to represent binary data. Magnetic tapes are non-volatile, meaning they retain their data even when power is turned off.

The most common format for magnetic tapes is the cassette tape, which was popularized by audio recording devices. However, magnetic tapes have also been used for data storage in computers, with formats such as the IBM 3480 and 3490 being notable examples. These tapes were used for backup and archival purposes, offering high storage capacities for their time.

Magnetic tapes are accessed using a tape drive, which reads and writes data by moving the tape past a read/write head. The tape is typically wound on and off a reel, and the drive can move the tape forward or backward to access specific data. This sequential access method can be slower compared to random access methods used by other storage media, but it is well-suited for sequential data processing tasks.

Despite their widespread use, magnetic tapes have largely been replaced by more modern storage technologies such as hard disk drives and solid-state drives. However, they remain in use in certain applications where their durability and long-term storage capabilities are advantageous.
