A macroelement is a chemical element that is required by living organisms in relatively large quantities for growth and reproduction. These elements are fundamental building blocks of life, forming the structural components of cells and playing critical roles in metabolic processes. The most abundant macroelements in living organisms are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. These six elements form the backbone of organic molecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Carbon is central to organic chemistry, forming the framework of all organic compounds. Hydrogen and oxygen are essential components of water, a universal solvent vital for biochemical reactions, and are also found in many organic molecules. Nitrogen is a key element in amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, and in nucleotides, the components of DNA and RNA. Phosphorus is crucial for energy transfer in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and is a major component of nucleic acids and cell membranes. Sulfur is found in certain amino acids, contributing to protein structure and function.

Other elements like potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and chlorine are also considered macroelements because they are required in significant amounts, although typically less than the primary six. These elements often function as electrolytes, playing vital roles in maintaining water balance, nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and enzyme activity. Deficiencies or excesses of these macroelements can lead to significant physiological disruptions and disease.
