Maaperäjuuriyhteisö, often translated as the soil root microbiome or rhizosphere microbiome, refers to the complex community of microorganisms living in association with plant roots. This community includes bacteria, fungi, archaea, protists, and viruses, all interacting with each other and the plant itself. The soil surrounding plant roots, known as the rhizosphere, is a particularly nutrient-rich and dynamic environment that supports a much higher microbial population and diversity than bulk soil.

These microorganisms play crucial roles in plant health and ecosystem functioning. They can influence plant growth by promoting nutrient acquisition, such as nitrogen fixation and phosphorus solubilization, and by producing plant hormones that stimulate root development. Furthermore, the soil root community can protect plants from pathogens by competing for resources, producing antimicrobial compounds, or inducing plant defense mechanisms.
