Maanpeitteeksi is a Finnish term used in horticulture and ecology to describe vegetation or a planting arrangement that covers the soil surface. It refers to plants or plant communities chosen specifically to spread across the ground, forming a dense layer that reduces exposed soil. Maanpeite is used in landscaping, erosion control, slope stabilization, weed suppression, and aesthetic design.

The main functions are soil protection, moisture conservation, and temperature regulation of the soil. A ground cover can prevent erosion on slopes, reduce evaporation from the soil surface, moderate freeze–thaw cycles, and provide a habitat for small organisms. Evergreen ground covers offer year‑round cover; deciduous types provide seasonal variation in texture and color.

Selection considerations include climate and winter hardiness, light conditions (sun, shade), soil type and moisture, growth rate, and maintenance needs. It is important to choose species with low invasiveness, good winter survival in the local climate, and a spreading habit suited to the intended area. In gardens, gardeners choose between herbaceous perennials, creeping grasses, and low shrubs or mosses depending on site and desired effect.

Establishment typically involves soil preparation, weed removal, and proper spacing to allow spreading. After planting, regular irrigation until establishment, mulch to retain moisture, and occasional maintenance such as trimming or division may be required. Over time, some patches may need replacement to maintain even coverage.
