Mõõtesüsteeme, commonly translated as measurement systems, refers to any set of standardized units and conventions used for quantifying physical quantities. These systems provide a framework for consistent and reproducible measurements, enabling scientific research, technological development, and everyday commerce.

The most widely adopted measurement system globally is the International System of Units, or SI (Système International d'Unités). SI is a modern form of the metric system and is based on seven base units: the meter for length, the kilogram for mass, the second for time, the ampere for electric current, the kelvin for thermodynamic temperature, the mole for amount of substance, and the candela for luminous intensity. All other SI units, known as derived units, are formed by combining these base units.

Historically, various other measurement systems have existed and some are still in use in specific regions or for particular applications. Notable examples include the imperial system, which was once dominant in the British Empire and remains in limited use in the United States, and the US customary system, which is closely related to the imperial system. These systems often use different units for the same quantities, such as feet and inches for length, or pounds and ounces for mass.

The adoption of a unified measurement system like SI facilitates international cooperation and trade by eliminating confusion and the need for conversions between different standards. While SI is the international standard, national metrological institutes are responsible for maintaining the primary standards and ensuring the accuracy and consistency of measurements within their respective countries. The development and evolution of measurement systems continue as scientific understanding and technological capabilities advance.
