móðurmjólk

Móðurmjólk, often translated as breast milk, is the milk produced by the mammary glands of humans. It is the primary source of nutrition for newborn infants and young children. Móðurmjólk is a complex biological fluid containing a unique combination of nutrients, antibodies, hormones, and live cells tailored to the infant's needs.

The composition of móðurmjólk changes over time, adapting to the baby's growth and development. It contains carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals essential for infant health. Importantly, it also provides antibodies that help protect the infant from infections and diseases, contributing to a stronger immune system. The act of breastfeeding can also foster a bond between the mother and child.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant's life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for up to two years or beyond. While móðurmjólk is widely recognized for its benefits, infant formula is available as an alternative when breastfeeding is not possible or chosen.
