Lümfikanal refers to a lymphatic vessel, which is a part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, organs, and tissues that work together to transport lymph throughout the body. Lymphatic vessels are thin-walled tubes that carry lymph, a clear to yellowish fluid, from the tissues back to the bloodstream. They are found in almost all tissues and organs of the body.

These vessels begin as tiny, blind-ended capillaries in the interstitial spaces between cells. As these capillaries merge, they form larger lymphatic vessels. These larger vessels have valves, similar to those in veins, which prevent the backflow of lymph and ensure its unidirectional movement towards the heart. Lymphatic vessels are a key component in the immune system, as they filter lymph through lymph nodes, where immune cells can identify and destroy pathogens.

The movement of lymph through the lymphatic vessels is driven by several factors, including the contraction of surrounding skeletal muscles, pressure changes in the thoracic cavity during breathing, and the pulsation of nearby arteries. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump like the heart. The primary functions of lymphatic vessels include returning excess fluid and proteins from the interstitial spaces to the blood, absorbing fats from the digestive system, and transporting immune cells to where they are needed. Disruptions to lymphatic vessels can lead to lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling due to the accumulation of lymph fluid.
