Lühiühendusrootoriga, often translated as short-circuited rotor, refers to a fundamental component of a squirrel-cage induction motor. This type of rotor is characterized by its construction, which consists of conductive bars embedded in a laminated iron core and connected at each end by shorting rings. These bars and rings form a closed electrical circuit, hence the term "short-circuited." Unlike wound rotors, there are no external electrical connections to the squirrel cage rotor during operation.

The principle of operation relies on the interaction between the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator and the induced currents within the rotor. When AC power is supplied to the stator windings, it creates a rotating magnetic field. This field cuts across the rotor conductors, inducing a voltage in them according to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Because the rotor bars are short-circuited, these induced voltages drive currents through the rotor.

The interaction between the magnetic field of the stator and the magnetic field created by the rotor currents generates a torque, causing the rotor to rotate. The rotor speed always lags behind the stator's rotating magnetic field; this difference in speed is known as slip. Slip is essential for induction to occur and for torque to be produced. The higher the load on the motor, the greater the slip. The simplicity and robustness of the short-circuited rotor design make squirrel-cage induction motors highly reliable and widely used in various industrial and domestic applications.
