Lítiumionakkumulátorokban, often referred to as lithium-ion batteries in English, are a type of rechargeable battery. They are widely used in portable electronics such as mobile phones, laptops, and electric vehicles due to their high energy density and long lifespan. The fundamental principle of a lithium-ion battery involves the movement of lithium ions between the negative electrode (anode) and the positive electrode (cathode) through an electrolyte.

During discharge, lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode, releasing electrical energy. During charging, the process is reversed, with ions moving from the cathode back to the anode, storing energy. Common anode materials include graphite, while cathode materials can vary, often involving lithium metal oxides like lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4), or lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). The electrolyte typically consists of a lithium salt dissolved in an organic solvent, facilitating ion transport.

While offering significant advantages, lithium-ion batteries also present challenges. Safety is a primary concern, as the organic electrolytes can be flammable, and issues like overheating or short circuits can lead to thermal runaway. Recycling of these batteries is also an important consideration due to the valuable and sometimes scarce materials they contain. Ongoing research focuses on improving safety, increasing energy density, and developing more sustainable materials and recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries.
