læsir
Læsir is a term derived from Old Norse, meaning "reader" or "one who reads." Historically, it referred to individuals who possessed literacy in a society where reading and writing were not widespread. In the Viking Age and early medieval periods, literacy was often confined to specific groups such as priests, scholars, and those in positions of authority. Therefore, a læsir would have been someone of some standing or education.
The ability to read was particularly important for understanding religious texts, laws, and historical sagas. Scribes
