Lårbenhodet, also known as the femoral head, is the uppermost part of the femur, or thigh bone. It is a spherical structure that articulates with the acetabulum, a socket in the pelvis, to form the hip joint. This ball-and-socket joint allows for a wide range of motion in the leg, including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, and external rotation.

The lårbenhodet is covered by articular cartilage, a smooth, slippery tissue that reduces friction and allows the bones to glide against each other during movement. A small indentation on the surface of the lårbenhodet is called the fovea capitis femoris. This pit serves as the attachment point for the ligamentum teres, also known as the ligament of the head of the femur, which helps to stabilize the hip joint and provide a blood supply to the femoral head.

Fractures of the lårbenhodet can occur due to trauma, such as falls, or can be associated with osteoporosis, a condition that weakens the bones. These fractures are a common cause of hip pain and mobility issues, particularly in older adults. Treatment for a fractured lårbenhodet depends on the severity of the break and may involve surgical intervention, such as hip replacement surgery.
