Lämpönopeutena, often translated as thermal velocity or heat velocity, is a concept used in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics to describe the average speed of particles within a system due to their thermal energy. It is not a single, fixed speed for all particles, but rather a statistical average reflecting the distribution of speeds at a given temperature.

The thermal velocity is directly related to the temperature of the substance. As temperature increases, the kinetic energy of the particles also increases, leading to higher average speeds. Conversely, at lower temperatures, particles move more slowly. This relationship is fundamental to understanding phenomena such as diffusion, evaporation, and the pressure exerted by gases.

The concept is often discussed in the context of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, which describes the distribution of speeds of particles in an ideal gas at thermal equilibrium. This distribution shows that while there is an average thermal velocity, individual particles will have a wide range of speeds, with some moving much faster and others much slower. Mathematically, the thermal velocity can be related to the Boltzmann constant and temperature.
