Lämpömittauksista, or thermometry, is the science and practice of measuring temperature. Temperature is a physical quantity that expresses the degree of hotness or coldness of a substance, and it is a fundamental property in many scientific and industrial applications. The process of measuring temperature typically involves using a thermometer, a device that indicates the temperature of its surroundings.

Thermometers work based on various physical principles. Common types include liquid-in-glass thermometers, which utilize the thermal expansion of a liquid (like mercury or alcohol) within a sealed tube. As temperature rises, the liquid expands and rises in the calibrated tube. Bimetallic strip thermometers rely on the differential expansion of two different metals joined together. When heated, one metal expands more than the other, causing the strip to bend, which can be used to move a pointer.

Electronic thermometers are increasingly prevalent and often employ sensors whose electrical properties change with temperature. Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and thermocouples are examples of such sensors. RTDs change their electrical resistance, while thermocouples generate a voltage proportional to the temperature difference. Infrared thermometers measure thermal radiation emitted by an object, allowing for non-contact temperature measurement.

The choice of thermometer depends on the required accuracy, temperature range, and the specific application. Accurate temperature measurement is crucial in fields such as meteorology, medicine, chemistry, and manufacturing. Standardized scales like Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin are used to report temperature values consistently. Calibration of thermometers is essential to ensure their accuracy over time.
