Lämpökova is a Finnish term that translates to "thermosetting" in English. It describes a type of polymer that irreversibly hardens when heated. Unlike thermoplastics, which can be repeatedly softened and reshaped by heating, thermosets undergo a chemical change during their initial heating and curing process. This process, often called cross-linking, creates a rigid, three-dimensional network structure within the polymer. Once this cross-linking occurs, the material becomes permanently set and cannot be melted or remolded.

The curing process for thermosets typically involves heat, but can also be initiated by a catalyst or radiation. Common examples of thermosetting polymers include epoxy resins, phenolic resins, and polyesters. These materials are known for their excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength. Due to these properties, thermosets are widely used in applications requiring durability and resistance to harsh environments. This includes manufacturing components for the automotive and aerospace industries, electrical insulation, adhesives, and coatings. The permanent nature of their hardened state makes them unsuitable for recycling through melting, a key distinction from thermoplastics.
