Lammonsäätelyhäiriö, also known as thermoregulation disorder, refers to a condition where the body's ability to maintain a stable internal temperature is compromised. This can manifest as an inability to adequately cool down when exposed to heat, leading to overheating, or an inability to adequately warm up when exposed to cold, resulting in hypothermia. The body's thermoregulatory system involves complex mechanisms controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain, which receives signals from the body and initiates responses like sweating or shivering to regulate temperature.

Disruptions to this system can stem from various causes. Neurological conditions, such as stroke or spinal cord injury, can damage the hypothalamus or its pathways. Certain medications, particularly those affecting the central nervous system, can interfere with thermoregulation. Metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances, and even severe dehydration can also play a role. In some cases, underlying diseases like sepsis or thyroid dysfunction can lead to impaired heat regulation.

Symptoms of a thermoregulation disorder vary depending on whether the body is overheating or overcooling. Signs of overheating can include excessive sweating or absence of sweating, flushed skin, rapid pulse, headache, dizziness, and confusion. In severe cases, heatstroke can occur, which is a medical emergency. Symptoms of overcooling may include shivering, cold and pale skin, drowsiness, slurred speech, and loss of coordination. Severe hypothermia can lead to slowed heart rate, confusion, and loss of consciousness.

Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and potentially laboratory tests to identify the underlying cause. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause and managing the temperature imbalance. This may involve cooling measures such as applying cool compresses or administering intravenous fluids for hyperthermia, or warming measures like blankets and warm fluids for hypothermia. Preventing extreme environmental temperatures and ensuring adequate hydration are crucial for individuals with compromised thermoregulation.
