Lämmit käyrä, known in English as a heating curve, is a graphical representation used to illustrate the changes in temperature of a substance as heat is added to it. Typically, a heating curve plots temperature on the vertical axis against the amount of heat added or time on the horizontal axis. It depicts distinct segments that correspond to different physical states and processes.

Initially, when heat is applied to a solid substance below its melting point, the temperature rises linearly. This segment represents the increase in kinetic energy of the molecules within the solid lattice. Upon reaching the melting point, the temperature plateaus. During this phase, the added heat energy is used to overcome the intermolecular forces holding the solid in a fixed structure, converting it into a liquid. This is a phase transition.

Once all the solid has melted, the temperature of the liquid begins to rise again as more heat is supplied, again reflecting an increase in kinetic energy. This continues until the boiling point is reached. At the boiling point, another plateau occurs, signifying the phase transition from liquid to gas. The energy here is used to break free from the liquid's surface tension and intermolecular attractions.

Finally, after all the liquid has vaporized, the temperature of the gas increases with further addition of heat. The shape and specific temperatures of these plateaus are characteristic of the substance and are related to its melting point, boiling point, and specific heat capacities in each phase. Heating curves are fundamental in understanding thermodynamics and the behavior of matter.
