Lähisussystemeihin refers to proximity systems or proximity sensors in Finnish. These systems are designed to detect the presence of objects without physical contact. They operate by emitting a field or beam and sensing disturbances in that field or beam when an object enters the detection range. Common types include inductive, capacitive, photoelectric, and ultrasonic sensors.

Inductive proximity sensors detect metallic objects by creating an electromagnetic field. When a metal object enters this field, it induces eddy currents, which in turn alter the sensor's oscillator circuit and trigger a signal. Capacitive proximity sensors, on the other hand, can detect both metallic and non-metallic materials, including liquids, by sensing changes in capacitance. They create an electrostatic field, and the presence of any material with a dielectric constant different from air will change the capacitance between the sensor's electrodes.

Photoelectric proximity sensors use a beam of light, typically infrared or visible light, to detect objects. They can operate in various modes, such as through-beam, retro-reflective, or diffuse-reflective, depending on the setup and the object's characteristics. Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for these waves to bounce back from an object. This time-of-flight measurement allows them to determine the distance to the object and thus its presence.

Lähisussystemeihin are widely used in automation, manufacturing, robotics, and security applications for tasks like object detection, counting, positioning, and safety interlocks. Their non-contact nature makes them ideal for environments where physical contact might damage the object or the sensor, or where hygiene is a concern.
