Personal distance, from 1.5 to 4 feet, is used for interactions with friends and acquaintances. Social distance, from 4 to 12 feet, is common for formal interactions and business dealings. Public distance, beyond 12 feet, is for public speaking and performances.

These zones can vary significantly across cultures. In some cultures, people may stand closer during conversations than in others.
