Lähenemistsoonid, also known as proximity zones or approach zones, refer to the areas around individuals where they feel comfortable interacting with others. These zones are not fixed but are influenced by cultural norms, personal relationships, and the specific situation. Understanding these zones is crucial for effective communication and social interaction.

The concept of proxemics, the study of human use of space and the effects that population density has on behaviour, organization of space, and communication, was first introduced by anthropologist Edward T. Hall. He identified several distinct zones: intimate distance, personal distance, social distance, and public distance.

Intimate distance, typically from skin contact to about 18 inches, is reserved for very close relationships like family and lovers. Personal distance, from 1.5 to 4 feet, is used for interactions with friends and acquaintances. Social distance, from 4 to 12 feet, is common for formal interactions and business dealings. Public distance, beyond 12 feet, is for public speaking and performances.

These zones can vary significantly across cultures. In some cultures, people may stand closer during conversations than in others. Awareness of these differences can prevent misunderstandings and promote more comfortable social exchanges. Factors such as gender, age, and social status can also influence the perception and use of lähenemistsoonid. Respecting an individual's preferred proximity is a fundamental aspect of politeness and consideration.
