It is the initial currency that is being used or held. For example, if a company in Germany invoices a customer in the United States for goods sold, the euro (€) would be the lähdevaluutta if the invoice is written in euros. Conversely, the US dollar ($) would be the kohdevaluutta, or target currency, if the invoice is to be paid in dollars.

Understanding lähdevaluutta is crucial in international finance and accounting. It helps in tracking the value of assets and liabilities, calculating gains and losses from currency fluctuations, and managing financial risk. When an entity holds assets denominated in a foreign currency, that foreign currency is its lähdevaluutta in relation to its reporting currency, which is typically the domestic currency.
