A lymphangion is a type of lymph vessel that is capable of contraction and dilatation, enabling it to pump lymph fluid forward in the lymphatic system. It is composed of a segment of muscle-lined lymph vessel bounded by two one-way valves, which allow lymph to flow in only one direction.

In a microscopic view, a lymphangion consists of a cylindrical lumen surrounded by a layer of contractile cells, which are responsible for the vessel's ability to contract and dilate. The one-way valves are critical in ensuring the unidirectional flow of lymph, preventing it from backflowing into the previous lymphangion.

A series of lymphangions together form a lymphatic vessel, which transports lymph created by the lymphatic capillaries to the larger lymphatic trunks. The lymphatic system relies on the coordinated contraction and relaxation of lymphangions to facilitate the return of lymph to the blood circulation. This is achieved through a peristaltic action, wherein the contraction of one lymphangion causes the relaxation of the adjacent upstream vessel, allowing the lymph to flow forward.

Dysfunction or obstruction of lymphangions can lead to conditions such as lymphedema, where the impaired lymph flow leads to accumulation of lymph and subsequent swelling in a particular region of the body. In the context of certain diseases, abnormal lymphangion structure or function may be associated with various pathological processes. However, a comprehensive understanding of lymphangions remains crucial for advancing our knowledge of lymphatic physiology and fluid dynamics.
