Lymfproduktion refers to the process by which lymph, a fluid crucial for the immune system and fluid balance, is formed. This process primarily occurs within the lymphatic system, a network of vessels, tissues, and organs that work together to transport lymph throughout the body.

Lymph originates from interstitial fluid, which bathes the cells in the body. As blood circulates, plasma leaks out of capillaries into the surrounding tissues. This fluid, now called interstitial fluid, contains water, proteins, waste products, and immune cells. Most of this fluid is reabsorbed back into the blood capillaries, but a portion enters the lymphatic capillaries, where it is then called lymph.

The formation of lymph is influenced by several factors. Increased pressure within the blood capillaries, due to factors like inflammation or increased blood flow, can force more fluid into the interstitial space. The permeability of the blood capillaries also plays a role; more permeable capillaries allow more fluid and larger molecules to escape. Once in the lymphatic capillaries, the lymph's movement is aided by the contraction of surrounding muscles, the pulsing of nearby arteries, and the smooth muscle in the walls of larger lymphatic vessels. The lymphatic system also contains valves that prevent backflow, ensuring unidirectional transport of lymph. The primary sites of lymph production and filtration are lymph nodes, where immune cells can survey the lymph for pathogens.
