Luurankolihakset, also known as striated muscle, are one of the three types of muscle tissue found in the body, alongside smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. They are primarily responsible for voluntary movements, meaning we consciously control their actions. These muscles are attached to bones by tendons, and when they contract, they pull on the bones, causing movement at the joints.

The cells that make up skeletal muscle tissue are long, cylindrical, and multinucleated. Under a microscope, they exhibit a characteristic striped or striated appearance due to the arrangement of contractile proteins, actin and myosin, into repeating units called sarcomeres. This organized structure is essential for their efficient and powerful contractions.

Skeletal muscles are crucial for a wide range of activities, from walking and running to lifting objects and maintaining posture. They also play a role in breathing, as muscles like the diaphragm are skeletal muscles. The strength and endurance of skeletal muscles can be improved through regular exercise and training. Conversely, inactivity can lead to muscle atrophy, a decrease in muscle mass and strength. Unlike smooth and cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle is under voluntary control, allowing us to initiate and stop movements as needed.
