Luottamusvälilaskelmia, known in English as confidence interval calculations, are a fundamental concept in statistical inference. They provide a range of plausible values for an unknown population parameter, such as the population mean or proportion, based on a sample from that population. Instead of providing a single point estimate, which is a single number that represents the parameter, a confidence interval acknowledges the uncertainty inherent in using a sample.

The construction of a confidence interval typically involves a point estimate, a critical value from a probability distribution (like the normal or t-distribution), and the standard error of the estimate. The standard error measures the variability of the sampling distribution of the point estimate. The level of confidence, often expressed as a percentage (e.g., 95%), indicates the long-run proportion of intervals that would contain the true population parameter if the sampling process were repeated many times.

A 95% confidence interval, for instance, means that if we were to draw numerous samples and construct a confidence interval for each, approximately 95% of these intervals would capture the true population parameter. It is crucial to understand that a specific confidence interval either contains the true parameter or it does not; the confidence level refers to the reliability of the method used to construct the interval.

The width of a confidence interval is influenced by the sample size and the variability within the sample. Larger sample sizes generally lead to narrower intervals, indicating greater precision. Similarly, lower variability in the data results in a narrower interval. Confidence intervals are widely used in research and decision-making to quantify the uncertainty associated with sample-based estimates and to draw conclusions about populations.
