Lungeblodstrømning refers to the circulation of blood through the lungs. This is a crucial part of the cardiopulmonary system, responsible for oxygenating the blood and removing carbon dioxide. The process begins when deoxygenated blood from the body returns to the right side of the heart, specifically the right atrium. From there, it is pumped into the right ventricle, which then forcefully ejects the blood into the pulmonary artery.

The pulmonary artery branches into smaller vessels, eventually reaching the capillaries that surround the alveoli within the lungs. In these tiny capillaries, a gas exchange takes place. Oxygen from the inhaled air in the alveoli diffuses across the thin alveolar and capillary walls into the bloodstream. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.

Once oxygenated, the blood collects in the pulmonary veins, which carry it back to the left side of the heart, entering the left atrium. From the left atrium, the oxygen-rich blood flows into the left ventricle, which then pumps it out to the rest of the body to supply oxygen to tissues and organs.
