Luminescentiecentra refers to localized sites within a material where luminescence occurs. Luminescence is the emission of light by a substance that has not been heated, in contrast to incandescence where light is emitted by a substance as a result of being heated. These centers are often associated with imperfections, impurities, or specific atomic arrangements within the material's crystal lattice or molecular structure.

When a luminescent center absorbs energy, typically from photons (excitation), electrons within the center are promoted to higher energy levels. As these electrons return to their ground state, they release the excess energy as photons of light. The specific wavelength, or color, of the emitted light is characteristic of the luminescent center's structure and the energy difference between the excited and ground states.

Different types of luminescent centers exist, categorized by the mechanism of their formation and excitation. These can include point defects like vacancies or interstitials in crystals, or dopant atoms (activators) introduced into a host material. For example, in phosphors used in lighting or displays, specific impurity ions act as luminescent centers, absorbing UV or electrical energy and re-emitting visible light.
