Luftkonditionering, often shortened to AC or air conditioning, refers to the process of altering the properties of air to more comfortable conditions for human beings. This typically involves cooling the air, but can also include dehumidifying, heating, and purifying. The primary goal is to maintain a desirable temperature and humidity level within an enclosed space, such as a home, office, or vehicle.

The basic principle behind most air conditioning systems is refrigeration. A refrigerant circulates through a closed loop, undergoing changes in pressure and state. In the evaporator coil, the liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air, causing it to evaporate into a gas. This cooled air is then circulated back into the room. The gaseous refrigerant then moves to the condenser coil, typically located outdoors, where it releases the absorbed heat to the outside air and condenses back into a liquid, completing the cycle.

Key components of a typical air conditioning system include a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator. Modern air conditioners come in various forms, from central systems serving an entire building to individual window units and portable devices. Energy efficiency is a significant consideration in air conditioner design and consumer choice, with ratings like SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) indicating performance. Beyond comfort, air conditioning plays a role in preserving goods in storage and in industrial processes.
