lowveld

Lowveld is a geographic region in southern Africa, referring to the low-lying plains of the eastern part of South Africa, primarily in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces, with portions extending into Eswatini (Swaziland) and Mozambique. The name derives from Afrikaans laagveld, meaning “low field” or “low-lying ground.” The Lowveld lies to the east of the Highveld and the Drakensberg escarpment, and stretches from the interior foothills toward the coast, bordered by the Lebombo Mountains along the northeastern fringe of the region.

The area is characterized by warm to hot temperatures for most of the year and a pronounced summer rainfall pattern, with a dry winter season. Rainfall varies from roughly 450 mm in western parts to more than 700–1000 mm in the eastern foothills. The climate supports expansive savanna and woodland landscapes, with many acacia and mopane trees and a richness of wildlife in protected areas.

The Lowveld is best known for Kruger National Park, which straddles the northeastern Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces, and the surrounding private reserves. Other notable features include the Blyde River Canyon and the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga. The region is also an important agricultural area, producing citrus and subtropical fruits, with sugarcane grown in suitable zones and tourism playing a significant economic role.

Major towns and urban centers in the Lowveld include Mbombela (Nelspruit), Phalaborwa, and Tzaneen, which serve as regional hubs for commerce, administration, and access to natural attractions.
