Lokameltingu is a Mikir language spoken by the Mikir people, an ethnic group native to the North Cachar Hills district in the state of Assam, India. It is considered a critically endangered language, with only a few fluent speakers remaining.

Linguistically, lokameltingu is a member of the Boro-Garo language family, a branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is characterized by a simple phonology system, consisting of 11 consonant phonemes and 6 vowel phonemes. The language is agglutinative, with a system of suffixes and prefixes used to indicate grammatical relationships.

The script used to write lokameltingu is based on the Roman alphabet, although it is not widely used. Traditionally, the language was passed down through oral tradition, with stories and legends told through songs and dances.

Efforts have been made to document and preserve the lokameltingu language, including language documentation projects and language education programs. However, the ongoing urbanization and cultural assimilation of the Mikir people pose significant challenges to the language's survival.
