In descriptions where Lipolyysia is discussed, it is depicted as Gram-negative to Gram-variable, rod-shaped, and non-spore-forming, typically measuring about 1–2 micrometers in length. Its cells are often described as metabolically versatile, capable of surviving in nutrient-poor conditions when lipids are available.

Habitat and metabolism are central to Lipolyysia’s characterization. It is said to inhabit lipid-rich environments such as oil-contaminated soils, dairy-waste lagoons, and hydrocarbon seeps. Its hallmark is lipolytic activity: extracellular lipases break down triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids, enabling growth on fat-rich substrates. Genomics and taxonomy for Lipolyysia are not settled in formal classifications. Draft genomes are described as ranging from roughly 3.0 to 4.5 megabases with a GC content around 58–65%, but taxonomic placement varies between proposed descriptions, with occasional references to Proteobacteria-like or Bacteroidota-like affiliations. As a result, Lipolyysia remains a tentative taxon without wide consensus.

Species have been proposed in illustrative materials, such as Lipolyysia lipolytica or Lipolyysia hydrocarbonica, but these names are not widely accepted as formal taxa. Potential applications highlighted include bioremediation of fat- and oil-polluted environments and industrial lipase production, pending further research and formal validation.
