linjaksi

Linjaksi is the translative form of the Finnish noun linja. In Finnish grammar, the translative case, marked by the suffix -ksi, indicates a change of state, designation, or role, roughly corresponding to the English “into” or “as.” Therefore linjaksi expresses becoming or being designated as a line, route, policy, or approach, depending on the sense of linja in the surrounding context.

The noun linja has several related senses, including a physical line or cord, a route or timetable, and a policy or line of action. When linja is used in a figurative sense with meanings such as plan, strategy, or policy, linjaksi can convey “as a line of action” or “into a policy.” Because of its dependence on context, linjaksi is comparatively rare in everyday speech and is more likely to be encountered in linguistic descriptions, dictionaries, or formal writing.

Understanding linjaksi requires familiarity with the translative suffix -ksi and with the various senses of linja. The form is not a separate vocabulary item with independent meaning, but a grammatical inflection of linja.
