Linealer is the term used for a straightedge used to measure length and to draw straight lines. In many languages linealer is the plural form of lineal and corresponds to what is commonly called a ruler in English. The linealer is a basic drafting and measuring instrument found in education, carpentry, architecture, engineering, and manufacturing.

Linealers are typically flat and rigid, made from wood, metal, or durable plastic. They come in a range of lengths, with common sizes including 15 cm, 30 cm, 60 cm, and 1 m. Most linealers are marked with metric divisions (millimeters and centimeters); many also include imperial divisions (inches and fractions). Some rulers feature a vernier scale or a rotating edge to read measurements more precisely. Folding linealers, or folding rulers, use hinged segments that collapse for compact storage. Steel linealers offer higher rigidity and durability, while plastic models are inexpensive and lightweight.

Other features include alternative edges, such as beveled or chamfered edges for scribing, and paired edges for drawing parallel lines. Some linealers incorporate combination tools, such as a square edge (try square) or a protractor for angle measurement.

Care and accuracy: a linealer must lie flat on a surface and be free of warps. The zero point should be continuous and clean to ensure accurate readings. Storage in a protective case helps prevent damage and distortion.
