Limekierrossa is a Finnish term that translates to "lime recession" or "lime erosion." It refers to the gradual wearing away of limestone and other carbonate rocks due to the chemical action of rainwater. This process is a significant factor in shaping karst landscapes, which are characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves.

The primary mechanism behind limekierrossa is the dissolution of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) by carbonic acid (H2CO3). Carbonic acid forms when carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere dissolves in rainwater. The slightly acidic water then reacts with the limestone, breaking down the rock into soluble calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2). This dissolved material is then carried away by water, leading to the characteristic features of karst topography.

Factors influencing the rate of limekierrossa include the acidity of the rainfall, the amount of rainfall, the surface area of the rock exposed, and the presence of organic acids from decaying vegetation, which can further enhance dissolution.
