Lihassolukoissa, also known as muscle spindles, are sensory receptors found within skeletal muscles. They are responsible for detecting changes in muscle length and the rate of change in muscle length. These specialized structures play a crucial role in proprioception, which is the body's ability to sense its position and movement in space.

A muscle spindle is composed of a few specialized muscle fibers called intrafusal fibers, which are distinct from the extrafusal fibers that generate muscle force. These intrafusal fibers are enclosed within a connective tissue capsule. Sensory neurons, known as afferent neurons, are wrapped around these intrafusal fibers. When the muscle stretches, the intrafusal fibers are also stretched, activating the sensory neurons.

This activation sends signals to the central nervous system, primarily the spinal cord and brain. The information conveyed by muscle spindles allows for precise control of voluntary movements and is essential for maintaining posture and balance. They are also key components of reflex arcs, such as the stretch reflex, which helps to resist sudden, involuntary muscle lengthening. For instance, when a doctor taps your knee with a reflex hammer, it stretches the quadriceps muscle, activating the muscle spindles and causing a rapid contraction that extends the lower leg. The sensitivity of muscle spindles can be modulated by signals from the brain, allowing for adjustments in muscle stiffness and fine-tuning of movement.
