Levylämpönvaihdin, known in English as a plate heat exchanger, is a device designed for efficient heat transfer between two fluids. It consists of a series of thin, corrugated metal plates stacked together. These plates are designed to create channels through which the hot and cold fluids flow, typically in alternating paths. The corrugations on the plates serve a dual purpose: they increase the surface area available for heat transfer and induce turbulence in the fluid flow, which further enhances heat transfer efficiency.

The fluids are kept separate by gaskets, usually made of rubber or other elastomers, positioned between the plates. These gaskets prevent mixing of the fluids while directing them through the designated channels. The entire assembly is then compressed within a frame.

Levylämpönvaihtimet are known for their compact size, high thermal efficiency, and ease of maintenance. They are widely used in various industrial applications, including HVAC systems, food processing, chemical industries, and power generation. Their modular design allows for easy expansion or reduction of capacity by adding or removing plates. Cleaning and descaling are also relatively straightforward, as the plates can be disassembled. The materials used for the plates vary depending on the application and the fluids being handled, with common choices including stainless steel, titanium, and various alloys.
