Leukocytózou, also known as leukocytosis, is a condition characterized by an elevated white blood cell count in the blood. White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are a crucial part of the immune system, helping the body fight off infections and other diseases. A normal white blood cell count typically ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 cells per microliter of blood. When this count significantly exceeds this range, it is considered leukocytosis.

There are several types of white blood cells, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Leukocytosis can involve an increase in one or more of these types. The most common cause of leukocytosis is infection, as the body produces more white blood cells to combat invading pathogens like bacteria or viruses.

However, leukocytosis is not always indicative of infection. Other potential causes include inflammation, stress, certain medications such as corticosteroids, strenuous exercise, tissue damage from injury or surgery, and some types of cancer, particularly leukemias and lymphomas. In some cases, particularly if the increase is mild, leukocytosis can be temporary and resolve on its own without specific treatment.

Diagnosing the cause of leukocytosis usually involves a complete blood count (CBC) with differential, which identifies the specific types of white blood cells that are elevated. Further investigation may be necessary to determine the underlying reason for the increased count. Treatment for leukocytosis depends entirely on its cause. If it's due to an infection, antibiotics or antivirals may be prescribed. If it's related to inflammation or another underlying condition, treatment will focus on managing that specific issue.
