Leukocyttrekruttering, also known as leukocyte recruitment, is a critical process in the immune response that involves the migration of leukocytes (white blood cells) from the bloodstream into the tissues in response to infection or injury. This process is essential for the body to mount an effective defense against pathogens and to repair damaged tissues.

The recruitment of leukocytes is a multi-step process that begins with the release of chemical signals, known as chemokines, by infected or injured cells. These chemokines attract leukocytes from the bloodstream into the affected tissue. The first step in this process is the rolling of leukocytes on the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels. This rolling is mediated by selectins, a family of adhesion molecules expressed on the surface of endothelial cells.

Once the leukocytes have rolled along the endothelial surface, they undergo a process called firm adhesion, which is mediated by integrins, another family of adhesion molecules expressed on the surface of leukocytes. This firm adhesion allows the leukocytes to firmly attach to the endothelial cells and to migrate through the endothelial barrier into the tissue.

The migration of leukocytes into the tissue is guided by chemokines, which are released by the infected or injured cells and bind to specific receptors on the surface of the leukocytes. This binding causes the leukocytes to move towards the source of the chemokine, a process known as chemotaxis.

Once the leukocytes have migrated into the tissue, they can phagocytose and destroy pathogens, or release cytokines and other mediators to amplify the immune response. The recruitment of leukocytes is a tightly regulated process that ensures that the immune response is directed towards the site of infection or injury, and that it is proportional to the severity of the threat.
